About

I started a safety consulting company in 1999, and I’ve spent the 27 years since helping businesses keep their people from getting hurt. My firm handles OSHA-related audits, training, and documentation, and we build accident prevention programs. What we’re best at is building systems that prevent injuries before they happen, not just paperwork that looks good after one.

StandToStern.com is where that background meets how I spend my free time.

Why This Site Exists

I grew up hunting in Oklahoma, and today I hunt mostly deer and ducks in Oklahoma and Texas. I’ve also sailed since I was a child, and I’m ASA-certified to skipper catamarans offshore on boats up to 50 feet. We keep a sailing yacht and a motor yacht, one in Texas and one in Georgia, and a golden doodle who comes along.

Between the tree stands and the boats, I use a lot of gear, and I look at it the way I’ve looked at equipment for decades: what happens when it fails, and does it get used correctly when it matters? Most gear reviews are written by people who read spec sheets. These are written by someone who hangs the harness, runs the feeders, secures the dehumidifier, and checks the life jackets.

How I Review Gear

  • I write about gear we actually use. The details, including the downsides, come from real use.
  • I include what’s wrong with it. Missing legs on a feeder, a hose that flooded a bathroom floor, a dog jacket that runs a size big. If it bugged me, you’ll read about it.
  • Safety comes first. A harness you don’t clip into or a life jacket you leave in a locker protects no one, so I focus on gear people will actually use correctly.
